Birthplace: Red Oak, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Elizabeth M. Schmid, age 86, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away, Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Elizabeth Mary Schmid was born July 3, 1923 in Red Oak, Iowa the daughter of Gottfried and Mathilda (Sohm) Schmid. She graduated from Red Oak High School in 1942 and took her nurses training at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa.Liz received her Registered Nurse status and went to Boston, Massachusetts with the WAAC Army Program and studied to become a surgical nurse. She then started her career at Murphy Memorial Hospital where she was a Registered Nurse, Surgical Nurse, Director of Nurses, and an assistant at the Doctors clinics. She retired after 54 years of service from Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Elizabeth was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, DCCW, Business and Professional Women of Iowa, American Heart Association, and American Cancer Society. Liz was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her brother, George Schmid and wife Lois of Red Oak, Iowa; nephews and nieces: Dennis Schmid and wife Kay of Des Moines, Iowa, Dianne Melendez and husband Angel of Waukee, Iowa, David Schmid and wife Jackie of Red Oak, Iowa, Tim Schmid and wife Charla of Red Oak, Iowa, and Teresa Wadhams and husband Mark of Pengilly, Minnesota, great nephews and nieces: Tony Schmid of Des Moines, Iowa, Krista Douglas and husband John of St. Mary's, Iowa, Tammi Parkhurst and husband Tony of Winterset, Iowa, Dominic Melendez and wife Shilo of Tecumseh, Kansas, Andrea Melendez of Des Moines, Iowa, Alicia Melendez of Humble, Texas, Valerie Utlesser and husband Cory of Winterset, Iowa, Angela Raffensberger and husband Vincent of Sidney, Nebraska, Aaron Schmid and wife Lisa of Red Oak, Iowa, Emily Schmid of Tempe, Arizona, and Katie Schmid of Davenport, Iowa; many great nephews and nieces and many other relatives and friends. Funeral mass will be celebrated 10:30 AM Saturday, August 22, 2009 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Ken Gross celebrant. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Rosary will be held 6 PM Friday, August 21, 2009 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with visitation with the family to follow until 8 PM. Memorials are suggested to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Foundation, Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, or the BPW Iowa Foundation. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
