Birthplace: Council Bluffs, Iowa Resided In: Walnut, Iowa Eldon Hough Ranney, age 87, of Walnut, Iowa, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, Saturday, September 6, 2014 in Cambridge, Minnesota. Eldon was born on February 9, 1927 in Council Bluffs Iowa, son of Henry Alfred and Gladys Nina Hough Ranney. He graduated from Missouri Valley High School in 1945, and served in the U.S. Navy where he was educated in radio technology and electronics. This led to his 40-year career with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. Eldon was united in marriage to Marilyn Jean Andrews on November 30, 1952 in Red Oak, Iowa. They lived in many places throughout the Midwest, including 13 years in Minnesota where Eldon developed his love for Minnesota Gopher Men's Hockey. After retirement in 1986, Eldon and Marilyn moved to Walnut, Iowa where they opened Everybody's Attic antique store, and subsequently The Victorian Rose. Eldon and Marilyn were very instrumental in the revitalization efforts in Walnut to become Iowa's "Antique City". Eldon was a member of many civic organizations throughout his life, including being a member of the Mason's, The Communication Workers of America, the Golden Valley, MN Chamber of Commerce, The Walnut Merchant's Association, and the Walnut Optimist's Club. Preceding him in death were his parents; Brother, Richard Ranney; Sister, Barbara Brandon; and wife, Marilyn Ranney. Survivors include daughters: Susan Ranney McKay and husband David of Maple Grove, MN; Cynthia Ranney Groeneweg and Robert Wenger of St. Francis, MN; and Cheryl Ranney of Des Moines, IA; Grandchildren: Daniel, Rebecca, and Megan Lindstrom, Jenni (Kyle) Bock, David (Myra) and Jeremey (Brittany) McKay, Kaitlin and Emily Groeneweg, Erica (Doug) Burman, Jonathon (Laura) and Jessica Madison; and great grandchildren: Joshua, Callie, Taylor, Paige, Angelina, Alexander, Colton, Sharlit, William, Carsen, Lucian, and Hayden; Sister: Nancy Finken of Waukee, IA; sister-in-law: Peg Ranney of Waterloo, IA; many nieces and nephews, other family and friends. A celebration of life service will be held 10:30 AM Friday. September 12, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church in Walnut, Iowa with Pastor David Krueger officiating. A luncheon will be held in the fellowship hall following the service. Burial of the ashes will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Red Oak, Iowa at 1:30 PM on Friday, September 12, 2014. Visitation with the family will be held from 5-8 PM Thursday, September 11, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church in Walnut. Memorials Preferred to the Walnut Welcome Center. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel of Red Oak, Iowa is in Charge of Arrangements.
