Obituary

Dwight Delbert Mellott, age 85, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Dwight was born December 27, 1937, in Red Oak, Iowa, the son of Delbert and Ruby (Newman) Mellott. He graduated from Wales Lincoln High School in 1955 and attended college at Iowa State University and University of Nebraska Omaha for a short time. He started farming and never really retired. He raised crops and livestock. Dwight was united in marriage to Karen Fuller on June 14, 1958 at the Wales Presbyterian Church in Wales, Iowa. Four sons were born to this union: Steve, Rick, Mark, and Jeff. He raised his family on the family farm and also served in the Iowa Army National Guard for 8 years. Dwight enjoyed many hobbies throughout the years including bowling, playing cards, going to the casino, and fishing. He enjoyed many trips to Minnesota at Dead Lake and later Cass Lake. He was able to make one last trip to the lake several weeks ago. Dwight was a life member of the Red Oak Elks Lodge and a former Eagles member.

Preceding him in death were his parents. Survivors include his companion of over 25 years: Penny Plank of Wales, IA; his sons: Steve Mellott and wife Connie of Wales, IA; Rick Mellott and wife Julie of Red Oak, IA; Mark Mellott and wife Jean of Red Oak, IA; and Jeff Mellott and wife Jen Sue of Urbandale, IA; Penny's children: Deanna Nowels and husband Roger of Red Oak, IA; Lori Stephens and husband James of Council Bluffs, IA; and Kevin Plank and wife Kristen of Lenox, SD; grandchildren: Evan Mellott of Peoria, IL; Luke Mellott of Wales, IA; Tracy Mellott of Council Bluffs, IA; Taylor Mellott and wife Kasey of Glenwood, IA; April Ranney of Council Bluffs, IA; Phil Ranney and wife Samantha of Red Oak, IA; Joe Ranney and wife Liz of Kansas City, MO; Michael Mellott and wife Shelby of Red Oak, IA; Aaron Mellott of Minneapolis, MN; Jacob Mellott of Urbandale, IA; Kobi Nowels and wife Emily of Stanton, IA; Brianna Peterson and husband Neil of Lenox, SD; Shaely Nowels and Drew Fisher of Red Oak, IA; Mykaila Stephens of Council Bluffs, IA; Brady Stephens of Evansville, IN; Gage Stephens of Council Bluffs, IA; Tyler Plank of Lenox, SD; Jaxon Plank of Lenox, SD; Cody Plank of Lenox SD; and Eli Plank of Lenox, SD; great grandchildren: James Ranney, Caroline Ranney, Cooper Mellott, Aspen Nowels, Henry Nowels, and Stanley Peterson; sister: Arlene Hartman and husband Ed of Denver, CO; and many other relatives and friends including a special cousin: Mary Lane Richards of Texas.

A celebration of life visitation will be held from 4-5:30 PM Sunday, July 23, 2023, at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with a time of fellowship and food to follow at the Red Oak Elks Lodge. Memorials are suggested to the Red Oak Elks Lodge Building Improvement Fund.
