Birthplace: Gravity, Iowa Resided In: Stanton, Iowa Duane E. Akers, age 79, of Stanton, Iowa, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2013 at his residence after an extended illness. Duane Elmer Akers was born December 19, 1933 in Gravity, Iowa the son of Merle W. and Goldie (Oziah) Akers. Duane served in the United States Navy during the mid fifties and was united in marriage to Deloris Hoops on January 13, 1957 in Bedford, Iowa. They made their home in Gravity, Iowa where Duane worked at the gas station. They later moved to Des Moines where Duane started in the road construction business. They moved to the Stanton area 45 years ago and for a short period of time Duane worked for the Montgomery County Roads Department. Duane retired in 2007. He was a member of the Villisca VFW. He loved antiques, woodworking, and doing dirt work. Preceding him in death were his parents; son: Randy Akers; granddaughters: Danette Harman Akers and Mercedes Akers; and sister: Darlene Armstrong. Survivors include his wife: Deloris Akers of Stanton, IA; children: Debbie Boyd and husband Chris of Percival, IA; Angie Akers of Stanton, IA; Rick Akers and companion Lorie Kier of Red Oak, IA; Gary Akers and wife Angie of Grant, IA; grandchildren: David Harman of Red Oak, IA; Summer and Kodi Akers of Grant, IA; and Shaun Akers and wife Jen of Sidney, IA; step-grandchildren: Samuel Kier and wife Brooke of Red Oak, IA; Cole Kier of Red Oak, IA; and Ashley Kier of Red Oak, IA; great grandchildren: Shaun Akers of Sidney, IA; Kendall Globe of Omaha, NE; Ava Lynn of Sioux City, IA; and Elizabeth Squires of Council Bluffs, IA; sister: Deloris Williams of Villisca, IA; brothers: Junior Akers and wife Edna of Peru, IA and Lloyd Akers of Gravity, IA; and many other relatives and friends. Graveside funeral services will be held 10 AM Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at the Evergreen Cemetery. Family and friends will gather at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel by 9:45 AM to go to the cemetery in procession. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the family. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
