Birthplace: Boone, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Douglas Duane Lemons, age 83, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Saturday, November 1, 2014 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Doug was born December 7, 1930 in Boone, Iowa the son of Fred and Mildred (Bennett) Lemons. He was raised in Council Bluffs and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1948. He started working at Chicago Northwestern and then served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He served aboard the USS Sperry and the USS Coucal. While stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii Doug was united in marriage to Carol Spetman on June 21, 1953 at the Submarine Base Chapel. Doug worked for Union Pacific Rail Road prior to joining Griffin Pipe Company in Council Bluffs. He retired from Griffin Pipe Co. in 1992. Doug and Carol also owned and operated Short Line Cafe in Treynor and Lemons Truck Line. Over the years, Doug worked for area grain elevators hauling grain. Doug enjoyed traveling, helping family members, reading, and feeding the birds and squirrels. Preceding him in death were his parents; sister: Joanne Anderson and daughter: Marcia Lemons. Survivors include his wife of 61 years: Carol Lemons of Red Oak, IA; daughter: Janice Robinson and husband Ernie of Villisca, IA; son: Jeff Lemons and wife Janis of Greeley, CO; grandchildren: Alicia Johnson and husband Darin of Essex, IA; Melissa Brecht and husband Dan of Coggon, IA; Leah Robinson of Ankeny, IA; Joshua Lemons and wife Ashlee of Philadelphia, PA; Britney Steinhage and husband Walker of Laramie, WY; Brent Lemons and wife Meghan of Twentynine Palms, CA; and Sarah Lemons of Greeley, CO; 11 great grandchildren; sister: Marilyn Novak and husband Rick of Omaha, NE; sister-in-law: Marilyn DeMey of Nixa, MO; brother-in-law: Alfred Spetman of Boone, IA; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10 AM Thursday, November 6, 2014 at the Elliott Church of Christ in Elliott, Iowa. Burial will be in the Arlington Cemetery near Villisca, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Elliott Church of Christ. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
