Obituary

Birthplace: Rural Red Oak, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Dorothy Hildred Jane (Bailey) Nuckolls, 88⅔, of Red Oak, Iowa went to be with her Lord Jesus, Tuesday afternoon, October 19th, while napping in her room at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Red Oak, with bodily death occurring after midnight on the 20th at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak. Dorothy was born by kerosene lamplight near the wood stove in her family's farmhouse just inside Frankfort Township (190th & L, SE corner, today) being delivered by Dr. Gladys A. Cooper. Dorothy grew up an Iowa farmgirl, attending Frankfort No. 4 schoolhouse before attending Red Oak High. Dorothy joined the WAVES late in 1951, but was discharged entry, as she'd married Francis E. Nuckolls, then a US Army corporal, recently returned from Okinawa during the Korean War. Dorothy lived a full life as a devoted wife and mother raising 6 children, all grads of Red Oak and Stanton High Schools, while having also lived and worked in Venice and Hawthorne, California, Joplin, Missouri, and Valentine, Nebraska. An avid reader, crossworder, and World War II historian, and the ability to make others feel at home in hers, she loved kitchen conversations over coffee with family and friends across the years, highlights of which are still recalled more than occasionally! She was preceded in death by her parents, Millard and Mildred Bailey, stepfather Virgil Llewellyn, brothers Henry M. Bailey (d. Korea, '50), Walter J. Bailey, all of Red Oak, and son-in-law, Lyle Holmes of Ida Grove, Iowa. She is survived by her elder brother Marvin C. Bailey and Ruth Ann Nelson of Corning, Iowa, sister-in-law Judy Corbin Bailey Waggener of Red Oak, husband, Frank, daughters Kim Holmes of Ida Grove, Juaneva "Wyn" Baugh and Rich Baugh of Lawton, Oklahoma , Ylene "Cis" Alm and Darwin Alm, Jr. of Atlantic, Iowa, Lisa Terry of Kearney, Nebraska, Samuel E. Nuckolls and Sigrid Nuckolls, of Gloucester, Virginia, and Justin Tod Nuckolls of Red Oak. Dorothy has 14 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Now, fully void of the cares of this life, our matriarch will certainly be missed. Graveside funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, October 23, 2021, at the Evergreen Cemetery in Red Oak. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
