Birthplace: Atlantic, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Dorothy Barr, age 82, of Red Oak, Iowa formerly of Elliott, Iowa and Yuma, Arizona passed away Sunday, February 1, 2004 at the Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. Dorothy Eloise Porter Barr was born September 24, 1921 in Atlantic, Iowa the daughter of Dallas and Lillie (Schuler) Porter. She started school in Elliott and graduated from the Grant High School in 1939. In high school she played basketball, softball, and was a cheerleader. After graduation Dorothy worked cleaning houses. A neighbor, Millie Barr hired her and she later married Millie's son, Russel Barr on January 25, 1941 in Savannah, Missouri. They lived on the farm until 1947 when they moved into Elliott where they ran a corn shelling business for a year. Russel and Dorothy then purchased the tavern in Elliott which they operated until 1957. They moved to Redondo Beach, California where Dorothy was a waitress at the South Bay Bowling Alley and they purchased and operated Barr Furniture Store. In 1970 they sold the furniture store and moved to Niland, California where they owned and operated a grocery store for 8 years. Dorothy and Russel retired to Yuma, Arizona. Russel preceded Dorothy in death in November of 1986. Dorothy moved to Red Oak in November of 2003. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and granddaughter: April Barr. Survivors include her son: John Barr and his wife Terrie of Thousand Oaks, California; daughter: Gloria Cohea and her husband Sam of Ocean Shores, Washington; 3 grandchildren: Michael Martella and his wife Misti of Riverside, California; Joe Martella of Costa Rica; and Steven Barr of Thousand Oaks, California; 2 great grandchildren: Kyle Martella and Giovanni Martella both of Riverside, California; 2 brothers: Dennis Porter and his wife June of St. Petersburg, Florida; and Reed Porter and his wife Jackie of Gravois Mills, Missouri; 4 sisters: Bernadine Fisher of Red Oak, Iowa; Phyllis Taylor and her husband Vernon of Atlantic, Iowa; Kathleen Kelley and her husband Richard of Elliott, Iowa; and Vivian Ellis and her husband Richard of Red Oak, Iowa; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. A time of sharing and celebrating the life of Dorothy Barr will be held 2 PM Friday, February 6, 2004 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested in lieu of flowers to the United Cerebral Palsy Parents Support Group. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
