Birthplace: Adams County, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Donald Dean " Grandpa" Walford, age 78, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away, Monday, December 9, 2002 at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa after an extended illness. Donald Dean Walford was born August 6, 1924 in Adams County, Iowa the son of John and Verna (Hinton) Walford. He graduated from the Corning High School in 1943 and was united in marriage to Leona Armstrong on July 20, 1946 in Kansas. Leona preceded Dean in death on July 22, 1972. Dean was then united in marriage to Betty Owen on August 21, 1975 in Westboro, Missouri. Donald Dean farmed Northeast of Corning and worked at the Rock Quarry before moving to Red Oak where he worked at the Union Carbide for thirty seven years retiring in 1990. Dean enjoyed gardening and boating as well as Race Cars of which he owned one. Dean also had a love for children which is evidenced through his many "Adopted" Grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife: Leona on July 22, 1972; son: Robert Earle Walford; and 2 brothers: Robert Walford; and Wayne Walford. Survivors include his wife: Betty Walford of Red Oak, Iowa; grandson: Gary Dale Pigney and his wife Christine of Davenport, Iowa; 2 great grandchildren: Chelsea and C.J. Pigney of Davenport, Iowa; step-son: Clifford Dale Owen and his wife Carrie of Syracuse, Nebraska; 2 brothers: Roger Walford and his wife Donna of Red Oak, Iowa; and Tom Walford and his wife Betty of Gilbert, Arizona; sister: Doris Von Bon and her husband Jack of Red Oak, Iowa; sister-in-law: Roberta "Bert" Walford of Red Oak, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; many "Adopted" Grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Memorial services will be held 1PM Friday, December 13, 2002 at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial of the Ashes will take place 10:30 AM, December 13, 2002 at the Mt. Zion Cemetery near Riverton, Iowa. Family and friends may meet at the funeral home at 9 AM to go to cemetery in procession. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Thursday, December 12, 2002 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. A memorial fund is being established. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
