Birthplace: Rural Emerson, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Donald E. Eastwood, age 88, of Red Oak, Iowa formerly of Emerson, Iowa passed away Thursday, July 8, 2010 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Donald Edwin Eastwood was born August 16, 1921 near Emerson, Iowa the son of Gaylord and Hettie (Jenks) Eastwood. He attended country school and graduated from Emerson High School in 1939. Don was united in marriage to Thelma Shoemaker on April 4, 1942 in Hiawatha, Kansas. Don helped on the farm southwest of Emerson until he was drafted in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He was awarded a meritorious citation for having aircraft under his maintenance control fly fifty eight straight missions without a mechanical abort. Upon his return from the war Don farmed for 11 years until going to work for the Iowa Department of Transportation. He retired after 27 years of service in 1983. Don and Thelma moved from Emerson to Red Oak in 1996. Over the years Don was a member of the Climax United Methodist Church, Emerson United Methodist Church, Champion Hill Presbyterian Church and most recently the Red Oak Presbyterian Church. Don was a member of the Emerson American Legion, Emerson Masonic Lodge where he held many positions over the years, Emerson Community Club, Walnut Cemetery Board, and Nishna Valley School Board. Donald enjoyed spending time with his family, visiting with others and playing cards. Don was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter: Donette; and son: Charles Brent Eastwood. Survivors include his wife: Thelma Eastwood of Red Oak, Iowa; children: Randall Eastwood and wife Donna of Omaha, NE; Sharron Goings of Lincoln, NE; and Darla Hetzel and husband Tim of Malvern, IA; grandchildren: Tricia Smith and husband Carey of Omaha; Trent Eastwood of Omaha; Kent Rumery and wife Brenda of Skiatook, OK; Greg Rumery and wife Crystal of Bowling Green, KY; and Trevan Hetzel and Tyler Hetzel of Malvern, IA; great grandchildren: Davis Smith and Taylor, Kara, Kailey, Brock, and Berkley Rumery; sisters: Marilyn Waterman of Omaha; and Kay Herzberg and husband Willard of Clarinda, IA; brother: Delbert Eastwood and wife Billie Jean of Indianola, IA; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 3 PM Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. Caryn Pedersen officiating. Burial will be in the Walnut Cemetery near Emerson, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Friday, July 9, 2010 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Walnut Cemetery. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
