Birthplace: Hopkins, Missouri Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Donald "Gump" Leroy Albright was born March 21, 1934 in Hopkins, Missouri, the son of Howard Leroy and Mildred Elizabeth (Ulmer) Albright. He passed away on Saturday morning, August 6, 2016 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 82 years, 4 months and 16 days. Don grew up in Hopkins and graduated from Hopkins High School in 1952. After high school he stood up as best man for lifelong friends, Carl and Nell Carmichael. Don worked in the grocery store until August of 1953 when he joined the U.S. Navy. In April of 1962 he was united in marriage to Sueko Soland and the couple had one daughter, Patricia. On October 21, 1979 he was married to Barbara Burrington in Pickering, Missouri. Following boot camp Don started a 32-year career with the Navy where he served in San Francisco, California, Korea, Japan, Pensacola, Florida, Bainbridge, Maryland, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He later served at the Pentagon, on the USS Borie (DD704) and at the Naval Historical Center in Washington, DC. Don retired from the Navy in 1977 and then worked for the State of Iowa DOT and Liquor Department and the Glenwood Resource Center until he retired from there in 1999. After retiring he worked census 2000 and continued part time at Glenwood Resource Center until 2006. Don was an avid sports fan and loved the Washington Redskins. He and Barbara enjoyed traveling. The two of them traveled to 49 of the 50 states together. He was also a member of the Eagle's Club for over 40 years. Don's true love was his family, especially his wife and all the grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step father, Dean Beauchamp; and his wife, Barbara. Survivors include his children, Patricia Albright of Green Bay, Wisconsin, Diane Starnes and her husband Raymond of Grimes, Iowa, Darrell McFarland and his wife Evelyn of Port Townsend, Washington; grandchildren, Donna, Diana, Devon, Cletus III, Jason, Donald, Tara, Jeremy, Elizabeth, Timothy and Chance; nine great grandchildren; a brother, Michael Albright and his wife Renee of Bedford, Iowa; along with other relatives and many friends. Never let it be said he didn't have a good time! Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak, Iowa with Dr. William Artherholt officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Red Oak. Visitation with the family present will take place on Monday evening, August 8 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak. A memorial fund is being established.
