Birthplace: Montgomery County, Iowa Resided In: Elliott, Iowa The family of Dean W. Hunt is sad to announce his passing on November 14, 2010, from causes, incident to age. He was a special person and will be greatly missed by family and friends. Dean was born at the farm home near Climax, Iowa, on February 20, 1928, the son of Alonzo and Rosa (Burr) Hunt. He graduated from Red Oak High School in 1945. He attended Iowa State University majoring in Agriculture Business and was a member of the wrestling team. He was united in marriage to Lillian E. Nelson on April 16, 1950, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Red Oak. Two children were born to this union. Dean was a dedicated farmer for more than 50 years in the Elliott area. He was a 60-year member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Red Oak, where he served on the church board for 8 years, sang in the choir, and was Sunday School Superintendent. Dean was a 50-year Mason member as well as a 50-year Farm Bureau Member, serving as President of the East Pottawattamie Farm Bureau. He was a 4-H member for 11 years and a leader for 10 years. Dean played on the Elliott Men's Softball Team. Bowling was a special passion for Dean; he won the State Farm Bureau Tournament. He was elected to the Griswold School Board for a 6-year term. Dean enjoyed tractor pulling for 10 years. He was a charter member of the Griswold Country Club. Dean served as President of the Pottawattamie County Livestock Feeders and was on the Pottawattamie County Extension Board. Dean was an Ak-Sar-Ben Ambassador and he and his family were honored as the WOWT Farm Family of the Week. He was on the Waveland Township Trustee Council for 12 years and chaired the Griswold Rural Fire Department for 10 years. Dean was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; brothers: Marvin and Donald Hunt; and brother-in-law: Paul Nelson. Those left to honor his memory are his wife: Lillian Hunt of Red Oak, Iowa; children: Linda Purkapile (Emerson) of Scottsdale, Arizona and Willam Hunt (Colleen) of Elliott, Iowa; grandchildren: Sarah Hunt and fiancé, Adam Hanson of Rochester, Minnesota and Emily Uhl (Nathan) of Maple Grove, Minnesota; brother: Verle Hunt (Ellen) of Marshalltown, Iowa; sisters-in-law: Doris Hunt of Shenandoah, Iowa and Ruth Nelson of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of life service will be held 11 AM Friday, November 19, 2010 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Rev. Dr. George Hooper officiating. There will be a time of visitation with the family after the services. A private family burial of the cremated remains will be held prior to the funeral service. Memorials are suggested to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the Griswold Dollars For Scholars Program, the Elliott First Responders, or the Griswold Fire and Rescue. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
