Birthplace: Red Oak, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa David Lee Gohlinghorst, age 72, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Monday, August 30, 2021, at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. David was born September 10, 1948, in Red Oak, Iowa, the son of David G. and Phyllis (Watt) Gohlinghorst. He was raised southwest of Red Oak graduating from Essex High School in the class of 1966. He served as an E5 Specialist in the United States Army and returned home to start a career in farming. He also went to Seminary for a short time and worked at Fareway Grocery Store. David was a member of Farm Bureau and the Nishna Church of Christ. He enjoyed reading, deer hunting, history, and going to museums. He was united in marriage to Charlene Marie Smith on September 9, 2006 at Stone Park in Sioux City, Iowa. They made their home on the family farm in Montgomery County, Iowa. David was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Patricia Seipel and Deb Dudzinski; and wife Charlene Gohlinghorst. Survivors include his brothers: Don Gohlinghorst and wife Mary of Red Oak, IA and Phillip Gohlinghorst and wife Patsy of Red Oak, IA; sister: Peggy Rasmussen and husband Layne of Johnston, IA; brother-in-law: Wally Dudzinski of Omaha, NE; step-children: Ron Smith and Daisy Rester of Des Moines, IA; Rick Smith and Rachell Barnes of Marshalltown, IA; and Ryan Smith and Shawn Jackson of Grandview, MO; grandchildren: Jeremy Smith; Deza Rester, Paytan Mayfield; Madison Mercer; and Dakota Mercer; great grandchildren: Chloe Mayfield and Vacilio Martinez; sisters-in-law: Donna Malloy of Des Moines, IA and Beverly Cortes of Pembroke Pines, FL; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services for David Lee Gohlinghorst will be held 10:30 AM Friday, September 10, 2021 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Salem Cemetery in rural Montgomery County, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Thursday, September 9, 2021 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. During these services, we will also have a celebration of life for Charlene Gohlinghorst. The family respectfully encourages attendees to wear masks and social distance during services. The service will be live streamed at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel's Facebook page. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
