Birthplace: Hamburg, IA Resided In: Red Oak, IA David Vernon Barnes, age 82, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Dave was born January 5, 1932 in Hamburg, Iowa the son of Vernon O. and Merna (Smalley) Barnes. He graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1949 and later enlisted in the Marine Corps serving in Korea during the war. He was honorably discharged in 1954 at Camp Pendleton in California. While in California, Dave was united in marriage to Marilyn Tucker formerly of Glenwood, Iowa. He owned and operated Barnes Painting Company for 56 years both in California and Iowa. Dave was still operating the business at age 82. Dave was a longtime Stanton American Legion member, a founding member of the Classy Chassis Car Club, a 51 year member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, enjoyed gardening, had a passion for classic cars and sports including the Los Angeles Lakers and Dodgers. As a member of the Elks, Dave served in many leadership roles including being the Exalted Ruler and being named Elk of The Year twice. Dave was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Marilyn in 1996; daughter: Pam in 1989; and brother: Dale Barnes in 2010. Survivors include his son: Patrick Barnes and wife Carol of Bettendorf, IA; grandchildren: Jessica, Melissa, Andrew, and Rachael Barnes; companion of 18 years: Bev McAlpin of Red Oak, IA; brothers-in-law: Keith Tucker and wife Barb of Glenwood, IA; Garry Tucker of Glenwood, IA; and Larry Tucker of Council Bluffs, IA; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, August 9, 2014 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dr. George Hooper officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Friday, August 8, 2014 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Foundation for the Oncology Department, the Elks National Foundation, or the Red Oak Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
