Birthplace: Spencer, South Dakota Resided In: Stanton, Iowa Darwin R. Boyer, age 87, of Stanton, Iowa, passed away Saturday, October 13, 2012 at the Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha after an extended illness. Darwin Robert Boyer was born June 17, 1925 in Spencer, South Dakota, the son of Earl and Frances (Ossian) Boyer. They moved to a farm Northeast of Stanton in 1927. Darwin attended school for eight years at Frankfort # 11 at Wallin and graduated from Stanton High School in 1943. He farmed with his father until he served in the Army in 1948. He was released for one year and recalled in 1950 when the Korean War broke out. Darwin served with the 1st Cavalry, 5th Regiment, Company H. He was an ammo bearer with a heavy machine gun squad. Darwin received the Korean Service Ribbon with 3 battle stars and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. Upon his return from the war, he started a grade A dairy operation, selling milk to Nelson Dairy in Red Oak. He later sold milk to Borden's in Kansas City. The milk cows were sold in 1970, but he continued with beef cows and general farming. Darwin was a lifetime member of the Villisca VFW Post #8998 and a member of the Stanton American Legion, Ernie Johnson Post #406. Preceding him in death were his parents; brother: Malcolm Boyer; sister: Louise Thoren; nephew: Richard Thoren; brother-in-law: Donavon Thoren; and special friend: Donna Paul. Survivors include his sister: Norma Johnson and husband Richard of Omaha, Nebraska; nephews: Mark, Michael, and Mitchell Johnson all of Omaha, Nebraska; niece: Jane Baker of Wylie, Texas; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dr. Eric Kutzli officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Red Oak. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the funeral at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Villisca VFW or the Stanton American Legion. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
