Birthplace: Emerson, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Darrell Lee Porter, age 71, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Sunday, November 1, 2015 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital after battling several health issues over the past several years at home. Darrell was born June 7, 1944 in Emerson, Iowa the son of Frank Edwin and Virginia Leota (Ronk) Porter. He was raised in Emerson graduating from the Nishna Valley Schools in Emerson. He started his working career in the plumbing and heating business and early in his life he served in the Iowa Army National Guard from 1965-1974 where he was part of the Special Reserve Force out of Sioux City, Iowa during Vietnam. He was united in marriage to Carolyn Clay on June 25, 1966 in Malvern, Iowa. They lived all of their married life in southwest Iowa. Over the years, Darrell worked for Leonard Nelson Construction and Leisure Homes in Shenandoah, Iowa and he and Carolyn operated Red Oak Mobile Home Sales and most recently Porter Septic Tank Service. He also worked for Culver Construction and Jipsen Construction. He was a member of the Levi Burton American Legion Post #575 of Emerson and had dual membership in Humanity Lodge #378 AF & AM and Topaz Lodge #438 AF & AM. He served two terms as Worshipful Master. Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers: Duane, Marion, and Ronnie Porter; and brother-in-law: William Clay. Survivors include his wife: Carolyn Porter of Red Oak; children: Andy Porter and wife Sheryl of Stanton, IA; Sherri Vrabel of Red Oak; and Kristen Akers and husband Justin of Kellerton, IA; grandchildren: Joshua Porter and wife Cortney and their children: Faythe, Noah, and Karter all of Red Oak; Morgan Porter and fiance Tyler Roberts of Red Oak; Cassie Vrabel of Red Oak; and Franklin, Caroline, and Sadie Akers all of Kellerton; sisters: Dolores Miner and husband Wm. "Bud" of Red Oak; and Joan Fahn and husband Wm. "Bill" of Panama, IA; sisters-in-law: Betty Hossle and husband Bob of Emerson, IA; Dorothy Porter of Essex, IA; Janice Bolton and husband Fred of Malvern, IA; and Lois Henderson of Malvern; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Saturday, November 7, 2015 at the Emerson United Methodist Church in Emerson, Iowa. Burial with Military Honors will be held in the Emerson Cemetery. Masonic Rites will be rendered 5:30 PM Friday, November 6, 2015 at the Nelson-Boylan -LeRette Funeral Chapel with visitation with the family to follow until 8 PM. Memorials are suggested to the Humanity Masonic Lodge #378, Topaz Masonic Lodge #438, or the Red Oak Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
