Birthplace: Pottawattamie County, IA Resided In: Red Oak, IA Darrell Lyle Behrens, age 76, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Thursday, October 4, 2012 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Darrell Lyle Behrens was born September 29, 1936 in Pottawattamie County, Iowa the son of Julius and Della (Croghan) Behrens. He was raised in the Walnut and Carson areas before moving to the Wales, Iowa area in 1943. He graduated from Wales Lincoln High School in 1954 and started a long career in farming. Darrell also served in the Iowa Army National Guard from 1956 until 1963. He was united in marriage to Lila Roberts on February 11, 1962 in Mt. Etna, Iowa. They lived near Wales, Emerson, Griswold, and Corning before moving to their farm near Guss, Iowa in 1974. Darrell and Lila moved to Red Oak in 2011. Over the years Darrell farmed, raised livestock, built modular homes, did electrical and plumbing work, and was known for his ability to fix just about anything. Darrell was a member of the Red Oak Presbyterian Church, enjoyed square dancing, and enjoyed spending time with his family. His family describes him as very loving and as honest as the day is long. Preceding him in death were his parents; his in-laws: Howard and Evelyn Roberts; brother: Sherwood Behrens; and brothers-in-law: Larry Roberts and Bob Gray. Survivors include his wife: Lila Behrens of Red Oak, IA; children: Gene Behrens and wife Kim of Villisca, IA; Rick Behrens and wife Nancy of Red Oak, IA; and Valerie Behrens of Creston, IA; grandchildren: Amanda Ward and husband Zach of Shenandoah, IA; Jordan Behrens of Villisca, IA; Allison Behrens and Sarah Behrens of Red Oak, IA; great granddaughter: Natalie Ward of Shenandoah, IA; brothers William and Delvin Behrens of Wales, IA; sisters: Julia Williams and husband Darwin of Villisca, IA and Darlene Proctor and husband Dale of Emerson, IA; sisters-in-law: Ann Behrens of Atlantic, IA; Glenna Day and husband Patrick of Stuart, IA; Janet Gray of Des Moines, IA; Mary Lou Oswald and husband Danny of Urbandale, IA; and Ruth Roberts of Corning, IA; brother-in-law: Glen Roberts and wife Mary Lou of Mt. Etna, IA; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10 AM Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at the Red Oak Presbyterian Church with Pastor Caryn Pedersen officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Darrell Behrens Scholarship Fund. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
