Birthplace: Coin, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Darlene R. Major, age 76, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Saturday, June 7, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Care Center after an extended illness. Darlene Rosella Major was born June 9, 1931 in Coin, Iowa the daughter of William Henry and Gladys Pauline (Kinman) Thorn. She was raised in Coin where she attended school. After her school days she started work at the Henry Field Company in Shenandoah where she met Walter Major, Sr. They were married on June 4, 1950 in Shenandoah, Iowa and later lived in Colorado for a short time before moving back to Iowa. They both worked at the Union Carbide Battery Company. They moved to Red Oak in 1956 where they raised their family and Darlene was a full time homemaker. Walter preceded her in death in 1972 and Darlene went back to work at Eveready Battery Plant retiring in 1986. Darlene attended Grace Baptist Church and loved to read the Bible and enjoyed her son reading the Bible to her. She also enjoyed craft work including paint by numbers and latch hook. Darlene also was a collector of religious memorabilia. Her greatest joy came from her family whom she loved dearly. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; four sisters: Marie Swigart, Thelma Shadduck, Violet Miller, and Nancy Smith; and a brother: Tom Thorn and many other relatives. Survivors include her children: Linda Major, Ralph Major, and Walter Major, Jr. all of Red Oak, Iowa; grandchildren: Hollis Major of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Tanya Major of Red Oak, Iowa; great grandchildren: Cheyanne, Bayleigh, Shilo, Marissa, and Tyler Major and Neveah Soar; sisters: Flossie Schurr of Red Oak, Iowa; Hazel Watts of Atlantic, Iowa; and Pauline Moore of Scappoose, Oregon; many nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Pastor Gary Walters officiating. Burial will take place at the Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City, Nebraska at 2:30 PM Wednesday, June 11, 2008. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested for Osteoporosis Research or Cardiac Research. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
