Birthplace: Essex, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Daniel F. Bergsten, age 92, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Thursday, December 10, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Society Care Center. Daniel Frank Bergsten was born August 25, 1917 at Essex, Iowa the son of Frank Oscar and Edith (Wyckman) Bergsten. He grew up in the Essex and Red Oak area attending country school and graduated from Red Oak High School in 1938. He worked for Gamble Stores in Red Oak before attending Fry Aircraft School in Omaha and then on to Baltimore, Maryland to work at the Martin Bomber Plant. Dan was united in marriage to Judith Hilding on January 1, 1942. Four children were born to this union. Daniel served his country in the Army Air Corps for three years at various places in the United States and then in the Pacific Theater in India and the Tinian Island for twenty-one months. After the war, Daniel farmed for twenty three years before moving into Red Oak where he was a custodian for the Red Oak Junior High School for twenty three years. He was a member of the First Covenant Church where he served as Trustee, Deacon, and was a member of the Covenant Brotherhood. Daniel was also a member of the American Legion. Preceding him in death were his parents; a twin brother: Phillip; brothers: Enoch, Paul, Reuben, and David; and sister: Goldie. Survivors include his wife of almost 68 years: Judith Bergsten of Red Oak, Iowa; children: Robert Bergsten and wife Char of Folsom, California; Diane Danielson and husband Lloyd of Albert City, Iowa; Joan Sibley and husband Stan of Glenwood, Iowa; and Suzie Bryant of Red Oak, Iowa; 11 grandchildren: David Danielson, Cynthia Crompton, Carmen Micklus, Jennifer Sibley, John Sibley, Tiffany Bryant, Sheridyn Bryant, Jesse Bryant, Laura Bergsten, Amy Bergsten, and Chad Seaburg; 11 great grandchildren; sister: Lillian Tollefsrud of Phoenix, Arizona; sister-in-law: Phyllis Bergsten of Phoenix, Arizona; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Monday, December 14, 2009 at the First Covenant Church with Rev. Alan Dean officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 4 PM - 6 PM Sunday, December 13, 2009 at the First Covenant Church. Memorials are suggested to the First Covenant Church. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
