Birthplace: Bedford, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Dale Alfred Dalton was born September 3, 1920 in Bedford, Iowa, the son of Paul Edwin and Oma Irene (Durfey) Dalton. He passed away on Monday night, July 7, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Center in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 87 years, 10 months and 4 days. Dale grew up in Taylor County, Iowa and graduated from Bedford High School in 1937. During high school, Dale played catcher for the baseball team and was known as "Dusty" Dalton, because he was always getting dirty behind the plate. Following High School he served in the United States Army from 1944 to 1946 during World War II. On September 3, 1941, he was married to Doris M. Tranbarger in Maryville, Missouri. This union was blessed with three children, John, Catherine and Stephen. Dale farmed for several years. From 1953 until 1961, he and Doris ran the Wales Store. For more than thirty years, he worked for the Montgomery County Road Department until his retirement in 1994. He was a very devoted husband and an all around family man. Dale loved to camp and travel. He enjoyed fishing and all kinds of sports. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed cooking, grilling out, and gardening. He was also known to loose a remote control or two. Dale was very proud of his military service. He returned to the Philippines later in his life after serving in the Army there. He was able to attend several World War II reunions. Dale also had the opportunity to attend the dedication ceremony for the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. in 2004. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Darrell, Duane and Dwight. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Doris Dalton of Red Oak; his children, John Dalton and his wife Nancy of Garden City, Missouri, Catherine Woods and her fiancé Lee Leiferman of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Stephen Dalton and his wife Mary of Topeka, Kansas; five grandchildren; Jeff Woods and his wife Sherri, Stacey Woods and her fiancé Thom Shanahan, Megan Green and her husband Jayme, Chad Dalton, Angela Kneip and her husband Peter; five great grandchildren, Justin and Jacob Briggs, Lacie Kneip, Dustan Dalton, Dalton Green; brother, Don Dalton and his wife Rosalie; sister-in-law, Frances Dalton; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Jan Tranbarger, Fran and Evelyn Tranbarger; along with many other relatives and friends.
