Birthplace: Clarence, Missouri Resided In: Council Bluffs, IA formerly Red Oak, IA Clifford Eugene "Cliff" Strachan, age 94, of Council Bluffs, Iowa formerly Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at the Risen Son Christian Village. Cliff was born April 16, 1921 in Clarence, Missouri the son of William Ellis and Maude Pearl (Melson) Strachan. He graduated from Shelbyville, Missouri High School in 1939. Cliff was united in marriage to Virginia Eckley on December 12, 1942 in Madison, Wisconsin. To this union, one daughter was born, Linda Lee Strachan on February 13, 1944. Virginia passed away on October 23, 1998. Cliff was a member of the First Christian Church "Disciples of Christ" in Red Oak and served in many positions including Treasurer, Usher, Deacon, and Trustee for many years. Cliff came to Red Oak as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps prior to his employment by the Gamble Stores before World War II. He worked with Gamble Stores for thirty seven years, having managed the local store for many years before transferring in 1969 to Webster City, Iowa, then Salina, Kansas and finally retiring from the Fort Morgan, Colorado store on February 2, 1978. He and Virginia returned to Red Oak at that time. Cliff was a U.S. Air Force veteran, who served 39 months during WWII. Cliff was a member of the Red Oak Masonic Lodge AF & AM; a member of the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, Salina, Kansas, was a former Shrine member of ISIS Temple also in Salina, Kansas, and was a member of the American Legion Post #67 of Red Oak, Iowa. Cliff was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia; brothers: Ellis, Garland, Ernest, Paul "Curly" and Wendell Strachan; and sister: Naomi Simpson. On January 21, 2000, Clifford was united in marriage to Kathryn (Smith) Petrauskas in Red Oak, Iowa where they made their home until moving to Risen Son Christian Village in Council Bluffs, Iowa in July of 2003. Survivors include his wife: Kathryn of Council Bluffs; daughter: Linda Schwieso and husband Dennis of Waterloo, Iowa; grandchildren: Lora Schwieso of Madison, Wisconsin and Darin Schwieso of Urbandale, Iowa; sister: Ireta Lee of Macon, Missouri; sisters-in-law: Hazel and Willadeane; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Monday, November 2, 2015 at the First Christian Church in Red Oak, Iowa with Pastor Will Brown officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Masonic Rites will be held at 7 PM Sunday, November 1, 2015 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak, Iowa with visitation with the family to follow until 8 PM. Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church or the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Association. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel of Red Oak, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.
