Birthplace: Mt. Rose, Missouri Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Clifford James "Cliff" Houtchens, age 87, of Rede Oak, Iowa, passed away Thursday, August 24, 2017 at his home after an extended illness. Cliff was born February 7, 1930 in Mt. Rose, Missouri the son of Lynn and Florence (Smith) Houtchens. The family moved to the Stennett and Red Oak area when Cliff was very young. He attended school in Red Oak and started working for the City of Red Oak and later Fox and Finley where he learned his skills in auto body repair. He was united in marriage to Ruby Blay on December 9, 1950 in Red Oak and served in the United States Army. Upon his return from service Cliff started his own business, Cliff's Body Shop and eventually operated Broadway Motors with his grandson, Justin Johnson until 2013. Cliff enjoyed collecting old cars, going to flea markets and auctions, traveling and investing in real estate. Preceding him in death were his parents; son: Danny Houtchens on July 12, 1980, and brothers: Bob and Dave Houtchens. Survivors include his wife of 66 years: Ruby Houtchens of Red Oak, IA; daughter: Cindy Smith and husband Scott of Red Oak, IA; grandson: Justin Johnson and friend, Radonna Kindall of Red Oak, IA; sister: Mary Brewer of Caldwell, ID; sisters-in-law: Janie Elwood of Red Oak, IA; Carolyn Blay of Red Oak, IA; Donna Blay of Twin Falls, ID; and Liz Houtchens of Emerson, IA; brothers-in-law: Larry Blay and wife Deloris of Red Oak, IA and Robert Blay and wife Judy of Villisca, IA; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Monday, August 28, 2017 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 2-4 PM Sunday, August 27, 2017 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. A memorial fund is being established in Cliff's name. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
