Birthplace: Witten, South Dakota Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Clarence Thorne, age 80, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Tuesday, February 19, 2002 at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Clarence Gustav Thorne was born September 15, 1921 in Witten, South Dakota the son of Oscar and Walborg (Johnson) Thorne. His early childhood years were spent in South Dakota and the family moved to Red Oak when Clarence was 14 years old. He attended school in Grant until he started farming with his father on the family farm. Clarence was united in marriage to Juanita Brees on August 3, 1942 in Maryville, Missouri. Clarence farmed for 21 years and then went to work for the City of Red Oak where he also worked for 21 years. For many years he enjoyed playing in a country western band and was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Red Oak. Preceding Clarence in death were his parents: 2 sisters: Viola, at a young age; and Irene McClain; and a brother: Chester Thorne. Survivors include his wife: Juanita Thorne of Red Oak, Iowa; 2 daughters: Carol Townsend and her husband Robert of Henderson, Iowa; and Joan Preston and her husband Richard of Prescott, Iowa; 7 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 4 brothers: Edvert Thorne and his wife Millie of Wichita, Kansas; Woodrow Thorne of Wichita, Kansas; Kermit Thorne and his wife Deanna of Kansas City, Missouri; and Keith Thorne and his wife Vicki of Basehor, Kansas; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Friday, February 22, 2002 at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Campbell officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 7-8 PM Thursday, February 21, 2002 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
