Birthplace: Dearborn, Michigan Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Miss Charlotte Wetzel, age 79, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away, Sunday, October 7, 2007 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Miss Charlotte Ella Wetzel was born August 14, 1928 in Dearborn, Michigan the daughter of Charles Wetzel, Sr., and Ella Stewart Wetzel. The family moved to a farm near Wales, Iowa in 1933 and Charlotte attended school at the Wales School graduating in 1947. While in High School, Charlotte loved to play basketball and was a guard for the state basketball team. She attended Red Oak Junior College graduating in 1949. Charlotte started teaching second grade at Washington school in 1949. She moved to the Webster school building after five years. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1968. Charlotte moved to a new school in 2001 when construction of Inman Primary School was completed. She taught second grade for 57 years retiring in 2006. Charlotte received many honors throughout the years including the Aksarben Good Neighbor Award, The Veterans of Foreign Wars Teacher of the Year Award at both the local and national level, UNO's Distinguished Alumni Award, the Rotary Club Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award, Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year Award at both the local and national level, Iowa Agriculture Teacher of the Year Award, Iowa State Education Association Teacher Award for the years 2002-2005, the Booster Club's Fan of the Year Award, was listed in the publications of the Who's Who of American Teachers and the Outstanding American Teachers, and was also the Grand Marshall of the Homecoming Parade. Charlotte was a member of the National Education Association, Iowa State Education Association, Phi Delta Kappa International, Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Delta Pi, and the Community of Christ Church in Carson, Iowa. Survivors include her brother: Charles Wetzel, Jr. and wife Betty of Red Oak, Iowa; sister: Donna Corliss of Red Oak, Iowa; nephews: Clay Wetzel and wife Kathy of Red Oak, Iowa and Jim Corliss and wife Liz of Red Oak, Iowa; niece: Betty Linn Wright of Spartanburg, South Carolina; great nieces and nephews: Valerie Raney and husband Jamie of Elkader, Iowa; Heath Wetzel and wife Katie, Derek Wetzel and wife Jamie, and Adam Wetzel and wife Megan all of Omaha, Nebraska; Kyle Snyder and Eric Snyder of Spartanburg, South Carolina; and Brock Corliss and Maura Corliss of Red Oak, Iowa; great great nieces and nephews: Alycia Raney, Nathan Raney, Logan Wetzel, Kaleb Wetzel, Seth Wetzel, Aiden Wetzel, Parker Wetzel, Tyler Wetzel, and Haley Wetzel; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Friday, October 12, 2007 at the Red Oak Community High School Auditorium. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Thursday, October 11, 2007 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Community of Christ Church or the Red Oak Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
