Charlene Marie Gohlinghorst, age 73, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away, Monday, August 23, 2021 at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Charlene was born October 5, 1947 in Marshalltown, Iowa, the daughter of Wallace and Edna (Olear) Groover. She was raised in Garwin, Iowa and graduated from Garwin High School. Charlene was united in marriage to Howard Smith in 1968 in Garwin, Iowa. Three sons were born to this union: Ron, Rick, and Ryan. Over the years, Charlene worked in the school system in food service as well as at nursing homes. She spent many years working at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Most recently she worked at the Clarinda, Iowa Treatment Center retiring in 2009. Charlene was united in marriage to David Lee Gohlinghorst on September 9, 2006 at Stone Park in Sioux City, Iowa. They made their home in Red Oak. Charlene was a kind generous person who enjoyed visiting with people and never knew a stranger. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook and loved baking often sharing her treats with others. Charlene always remembered holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries by sending cards to her family and friends. She also enjoyed decorating for the holidays, going shopping at thrift stores, and loving her cats. Preceding her in death were her parents; sister: Barbara Edel; and sisters-in-law: Patricia Seipel and Debbie Dudzinski. Survivors include her husband: David Lee Gohlinghorst of Red Oak; sons: Ron Smith and Daisy Rester of Des Moines, IA; Rick Smith and Rachell Barnes of Marshalltown, IA; and Ryan Smith and Shawn Jackson of Grandview, MO; step-daughter: Roxanne Mercer and husband David of Jefferson City, MO; grandchildren: Jeremy Smith; Deza Rester, Paytan Mayfield; Madison Mercer; and Dakota Mercer; great grandchildren: Chloe Mayfield and Vacilio Martinez; sisters: Donna Malloy of Des Moines, IA and Beverly Cortes of Pembroke Pines, FL; brothers-in-law: Wally Dudzinski of Omaha, NE; Don Gohlinghorst and wife Mary of Red Oak, IA; and Phil Gohlinghorst and wife Patsy of Red Oak, IA; sister-in-law: Peggy Rasmussen and husband Layne of Johnston, IA; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. A PRIVATE FAMILY Funeral service will be held Saturday, August 28, 2021 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Salem Cemetery in rural Montgomery County, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to the Montgomery County Family YMCA for youth programs. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. PLEASE NOTE THIS HAS CHANGED TO A PRIVATE FAMILY SERVICE. A CELEBRATION OF LIFE SERVICE FOR THE PUBLIC WILL BE HELD AT A LATER DATE.
