Birthplace: New Market, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Carolyn D. Olson, age 72, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Friday, March 27, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Care Center after an extended illness. Carolyn Dee Olson was born January 14, 1937 in New Market, Iowa the daughter of Orville and Agnes (Brenton) Mitchell. The family moved to the Villisca, Iowa area when Carolyn was very young. She graduated from Villisca High School with the class of 1955. She attended Burroughs Business School in Omaha and started work for Sears and Roebuck Company. Carolyn moved to Oregon when Howard was in the service and then they were married on October 28, 1956 in Villisca, Iowa when Howard was home on leave. When Howard got out of the military in 1957 they moved to Omaha until 1970 when they moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1973 they moved to Indiana and in 1977 back to Red Oak, Iowa where Carolyn worked for many years at the Fountain Square Pharmacy. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Carolyn enjoyed reading, watching movies, playing games, bird watching, spending time with her grandkids, and having coffee with family and friends. Preceding Carolyn in death were her three infant siblings; her parents: Orville and Agnes Mitchell; her father-in-law and mother-in-law: Frank and Evelyn Olson; her brother: Charles Mitchell and his wife Frances; and sisters-in-law: Marilyn and Phyllis Olson. Survivors include her husband: Howard Olson of Red Oak, Iowa; children: Kim Ellis and husband Lynn of Red Oak, Iowa; Mark Olson and wife Kathleen of Huntington Beach, California; and Karla Wood and husband Jim of Red Oak, Iowa; 7 grandchildren: Amy Ellis and Shayna Ellis of Clarinda, Iowa; Ryan Olson and Tyler Olson of Huntington Beach, California; Keegan Grebe of Huntington Beach, California; Brad Wood of Ames, Iowa; and Zach Wood of Red Oak, Iowa; aunt: Fern Guthrie of Oakdale, California; niece: Nancy Mitchell of Portland, Oregon; nephew: Duane Mitchell of Portland, Oregon; brothers-in-law: Robert Olson, Ralph Olson and wife Joanne, and Lyle Olson all of Red Oak, Iowa; and many other nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, April 2, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Fred Pilecki officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Red Oak Good Samaritan Center Bus Fund, the Red Oak Public Library, or the First United Methodist Church. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
