Birthplace: Red Oak, Iowa Resided In: Nixa, Missouri Carl James "Jim" Lake, age 77, of Nixa, Missouri passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2006 at the Cox South Hospital in Springfield, Missouri after an extended illness. Carl James "Jim" Lake was born September 29, 1928 in Red Oak, Iowa the son of Carl C. and Evelyn (Norling) Lake. He was raised on the family farm in Garfield Township of Montgomery County, Iowa and attended the Garfield # 5 school for 8 years and later graduated from the Emerson, Iowa High School in 1946. He worked for awhile before serving in the Army during the Korean War. After training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri in 1950, Jim served as a forward observer radio operator with Battery A, 9th Field Artillery 155MM Howitzer Battalion in Korea from 1951-52 attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Jim then went to Northwest Missouri State University and graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and also did graduate studies at Oregon State University. Jim was united in marriage to Elsie Youngberg on May 29, 1960 in Edina, Minnesota. They lived in West Okoboji after they were married and Jim taught school at Milford and later at Arnolds Park. Jim and Elsie lived in Spencer for many years where Jim taught at the business college of which he was an owner at one time. He retired in 1992 after 20 years of teaching at the college. Jim and Elsie moved to Nixa, Missouri in 1996. He was a member of the Union Memorial Church in Milford, Iowa, the American Legion, and the VFW. Jim enjoyed reading mysteries, American history especially the civil war, golfing, gardening, genealogy, and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Preceding him in death were his parents; sister-in-law: Lucile Inayatullah; and a brother-in-law: Dwaine Long. Survivors include his wife Elsie Lake of Nixa, Missouri; brother: W.E. "Bill" Lake and wife Audy of Henderson, Nevada; 2 sisters: Helen Long of rural Montgomery County, Iowa; and Bunny Lake of Torrance, California; 3 brothers-in-law: Dean Youngberg and wife Carolyn of Churchville, Maryland; Ray Youngberg and wife Juanita of Chandler, Arizona; and Roland Youngberg and wife Sue of Davenport, Iowa; and brother-in-law: Dr. M. Inayatullah; 8 nephews, 11 nieces, and many other relatives and friends. He will be missed by his many friends, many of whom were former students. He valued their friendship and took great pleasure in their successes. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, January 28, 2006 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. Craig Larsen officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Hawthorne United Methodist Church or the American Liver Foundation. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
