Birthplace: Montgomery County, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Blanche L. Brown, age 101, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Sunday, August 24, 2014 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Blanche was born January 29, 1913 in Montgomery County, the daughter of Calvin and Laura (Foster) Long. She attended Garfield (known as the Long School) until 8th grade, then attended and graduated from Red Oak High School. Following graduation, she attended school and worked for awhile in Omaha. Blanche had a life-long love for animals. As a child, she had a team of goats that pulled her little wagon. She later grew to riding a pony and horses with her neighbor friends. Blanche married Kenneth Brown on February 14, 1935, in Emerson, Iowa. To this union two sons were born, Calvin Eugene and Dennis LeRoy. Kenneth and Blanche farmed in Garfield Township. She was an active partner in running the farm, along with feeding the hired hands and raising a large garden, which she enjoyed sharing. During the years on the farm, Blanche had several dogs but "King" her handsome white Samoyed, was one of her favorites! Blanche and Kenneth moved into Red Oak in 1971. Blanche was a member of the Hawthorne United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Farm Bureau. Blanche was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth in 2002; parents, Calvin and Laura Long; brother, Clarence Long; son, Dennis LeRoy Brown; grandson, Michael Mundwiler Brown in 1990; sister-in-law, Mildred Long; nephew, Dwaine Long; niece, Sue Long Wagaman; and brothers-in-law, Lester, Dow and Donald Brown. Survivors include her son: Calvin Brown and wife Peggy of Red Oak; grandson: Scott Brown of Red Oak; niece: Helen Long of Omaha, NE, who was like a daughter; sister-in-law: Ruby Brown of Texas; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Friday, August 29, 2014 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-7:30 PM Thursday, August 28, 2014 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Hawthorne United Methodist Church, the Red Oak Rescue Unit, or the Montgomery County History Center. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
