Obituary

Birthplace: Page County, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Entering the world March 4, 1937, during a blizzard at her grandparent's home in Page County, Iowa, Beverly Jean was the first of four children born to Lloyd and Lillian (Westenburg) Hartstack. Raised on their Montgomery County farm, Bev attended Mount Hope, a single-room country school. She graduated from Red Oak High School in 1955, and was then employed at Mount Arbor Nursery in Shenandoah and the Thomas D. Murphy Calendar Company in Red Oak. In later years, Bev worked for Reiman Publications in advertising sales. Bev married her childhood sweetheart and just-across-the-road neighbor, Darold Lee Swanson (who had his eye on her since age 10), on November 3, 1956, at Fremont Lutheran Church at Nyman. Five children soon followed, Kevin Lee (1957), Kirk Darold (1959), Kent David (1962), Julie Ann (1963), and Kyle Robert (1970). The newlyweds have resided in Red Oak or on the Swanson family farm throughout their almost 60-year marriage. Bev is most defined as a loving wife, homemaker, mother and grandmother. She was a wonderful cook, avid gardener and lover of nature, flowers (especially pink lipstick impatiens and exotic lilies), birds and wildlife. She was active in Altrusa and women's activities at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Bev loved family trips to the Lake of the Ozarks and Branson, Cyclone basketball, fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, pickled herring and lemon meringue pie! Beverly Jean Swanson is survived by her husband, Darold, along with their children, Kevin Swanson, Kirk (Jerra) Swanson, Kent (Margee) Swanson and Julie (Hal) Hanson; her siblings Ron (JoAnn) Hartstack, Gary (Rhoda) Hartstack and Denny (Lonnie) Hartstack; her grandchildren, Heather Swanson, Daniel Swanson, Dylan Swanson, Dana Swanson, Lucas Swanson and Jeffrey Hanson. Beverly was preceded in death by her son, Kyle Swanson.
