Birthplace: Phelps, MO Resided In: Red Oak, IA Betty Elizabeth Wetzel, age 85, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away January 5, 2017 at the Hillcrest Grand Lodge in Papillion, Nebraska. Betty was born December 31, 1931 in Phelps, Missouri, the eldest child of Harry and Donna (Johnson) Mensen. She graduated from Emerson High School in 1949. Betty was united in marriage to Charles Elbert Wetzel on November 1, 1953. Charles adopted Clay Lynn when he married Betty. Betty and Charles were happily married for 61 years and always lived in Red Oak, Iowa until Charles passed away. Betty stayed home with her children until both were of school age and then started working at the Thos. D. Murphy Co. retiring after 33 years. Both Charles and Betty were long time Eagles members and were always ready to help when needed. Betty loved to cook, garden, sew, paint, travel, and spend time with her husband and family. Most of the time where you saw Charles you saw Betty. Betty and Charles traveled to all 50 states, Canada, and Mexico. Preceding her in death were her husband Charles in January 2015; her parentes, Harry and Donna Mensen; brother, Raymond Mensen; and sisters: Viola Clymer and Dorothy Majors. Survivors include her sister, Elaine Eberhart; son, Clay Lynn Wetzel and wife Kathy of Red Oak; daughter, Betty Linn Wright of Papillion, NE; six grandchildren: Valarie, Heath, Derek, Adam, Eric, and Kyle; eleven great grandchildren; and other relatives and many friends. The family hated to see her life end but are glad to know that Betty and Charles are together again. Funeral services will be held 3 PM Monday, January 9, 2017 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Sunday, January 8, 2017 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Red Oak Eagles Lodge. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
