Birthplace: Gray, Iowa Resided In: Elliott, Iowa Betty J. Howell, age 79, of Elliott, Iowa passed away Monday, March 26, 2007 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa after an extended illness. Betty Jane Howell was born January 3, 1928 in Gray, Iowa the daughter of Frank and Elma (Barratt) Murphy. The family lived in Gray, Iowa until moving to Elliott in 1942. Betty graduated from Elliott High School in 1945. Betty was united in marriage to William "Bill" Howell on November 17, 1948 in Gray, Iowa. Betty and Bill lived all of their lives in Elliott, Iowa where Betty was a telephone operator, a volunteer at the Elementary School, and was the site manager for the Senior Citizens Center for 17 years. Betty was also the site manager for the Red Oak Congregate Meal Site when it first opened. She was a member of the Elliott United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, Sunday School Teacher, a member of ONO Club, Treasurer for the City of Elliott, a member of the Elliott Business and Betterment Association, and a former Optimist Club member. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband: Bill Howell on December 17, 1993; her brother: Russell Murphy; and her sister: Mae Powell. Survivors include her son: Stephen Howell and wife Ronda of Elliott, Iowa; daughters: Nancy Taylor and husband Bill of Grant, Iowa; and Kathy Rush and husband Joe of Griswold, Iowa; grandchildren: Amy Payne and husband Tony of N. Sioux City, South Dakota; Shannon King and husband Scott of Emerson, Iowa; Eric Howell and fiancée April Ranney of Elliott, Iowa; Loren Taylor of Elliott, Iowa; Adam Rush of Elliott, Iowa; and Ben Rush of Maryville, Missouri; great grandchildren: Madisen and Sydney Payne of N. Sioux City, South Dakota and Dakotah, Ciara, and Noah King all of Emerson, Iowa; sister: Doris Helm and husband Elmer of Elliott, Iowa; sister-in-law: Marianna Johnson and husband Ray of Red Oak, Iowa; brother-in-law: Bill Powell of Overland Park, Kansas; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10 AM Thursday, March 29, 2007 at the Elliott United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery at Elliott, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
