Birthplace: Rural Stanton, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Bernice J. Swenson, age 91, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Society. Bernice Josephine Swenson was born May 5, 1922 near Stanton, Iowa the daughter of Clarence and Agnes (Carlson) Carlson. She graduated from Coburg High School in 1939 and attended business college in Chillicothe, Missouri. She did secretarial work at Thomas D. Murphy Company and in 1948 was the first employee hired at the National Carbon Company. Bernice was united in marriage to George Swenson on February 18, 1961 in RedOak, Iowa. Over the years she worked for Mayor Naftalin's office in Minnesota as well as offices in Denver, Colorado and Billings, Montana. While living in California, Bernice worked for Standard Oil Company. Bernice moved back to Red Oak in 2000 after her husband's death. She has been a resident of the Good Samaritan Society since 2008. Bernice was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Preceding her in death were her parents and husband: George Swenson on December 15, 1999. Survivors include her brothers: Quentin Carlson and Leland Carlson of Red Oak, Iowa; nieces and nephews: Carla Kirchert and husband Les of Essex, IA; Curtis Carlson and wife Liz of Clarinda, IA; Randy Carlson and wife Eileen of Essex, IA; Betty Williams and husband Mike of Omaha, NE; and Cathy Bee and husband Mike of San Antonio, TX; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10 AM Monday, June 24, 2013 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. There will be open visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
