Obituary

Birthplace: Rural Griswold, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak formerly Elliott Bernice Smith, age 87, of Red Oak, Iowa formerly Elliott, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Care Center. Bernice Celestia Smith was born September 11, 1920 near Griswold, Iowa the daughter of Louis and Elva (Rumsey) Crum. She was raised near Griswold and graduated from Griswold High School in 1938. She received her Normal Training during high school. She taught country school near Griswold for three years then was united in marriage to Raymond Smith on December 20, 1942 in Everett, Washington. They lived in California while Raymond was in the service and moved back to Iowa in 1947. They moved to their home farm in 1948 and farmed all of their married life. Bernice enjoyed being a homemaker and for a short time worked as a teacher's aid at the Elliott Junior High School. Over the years Raymond and Bernice enjoyed spending the winters in Arizona. Bernice continued her trips to Arizona after Raymond passed away in 1997 until moving to Arlington Place in Red Oak in 2001. Bernice was a longtime member of the Elliott United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for 27 years and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was also a former member of the Buckles and Bows Square Dancing Club, the Worthwhile Club, Farm Bureau Auxiliary, and was a past 4-H leader. She enjoyed sewing, playing cards, spending time with her family, and being a devoted grandmother. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband: Raymond; her sisters: Evelyn Hines and Marcella Goulding; and her brother: Frank Crum. Survivors include her children: Murray Smith and wife Connie of Red Oak, Iowa; Sheryl Buroughs and husband Ron of Griswold, Iowa; and Janis Ivie of Lawrenceville, Georgia; grandchildren: Jen Weidman and husband Mark of Washington, Iowa; Zachary Smith and wife Toni of Aeia, Hawaii; Julie Danker and husband Shad of Minden, Iowa; Sarah Smith of Honolulu, Hawaii; Jill Hoover and husband Jason of Washington, Iowa; and Tom Ivie of Mableton, Georgia; great grandchildren: Blake and Brenna Weidman; Tanner Jones-Smith; Ryan and Kallie Danker; and Karsen Hoover; sisters-in-law: Ethyl Crum of Coldwater, Michigan; Evelyn Smith of Manchester, Iowa; Darlene Frazeur of Red Oak, Iowa; Jane Leighton of Griswold, Iowa; and Geneva Smith of Griswold, Iowa; brothers-in-law: Bill Foust of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Hollis Smith of Sun Lakes, Arizona; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Saturday, March 22, 2008 at the Elliott United Methodist Church with Pastor Terry McClain officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Township Cemetery near Griswold, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Friday, March 21, 2008 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak. Memorials are suggested to the Elliott United Methodist Church. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
