Obituary

Birthplace: Exira, Iowa Resided In: Marshalltown formerly Red Oak Bernice Eileen McCrory, age 92, of Marshalltown, Iowa formerly Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Thursday, August 9, 2012 at the Grandview Heights Nursing Home in Marshalltown. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, August 13, 2012 at First Christian Church, 1909 Summit Street, Red Oak, IA with Rev. JoAnn Thomas officiating. Visitation with the family will take place from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at First Christian Church. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Bernice was born December 3, 1919 in Exira, Iowa. She attended a one-room country school through 8th grade and graduated from Exira High School in 1937. Her first marriage was to Harold Hays. They lived and worked in Oregon where their son Allen was born. After WWII, she was united in marriage to Donald McCrory on May 28, 1946 on the family farm near Anita, Iowa where their daughter Eileen was born. In 1951 they moved to a farm near Stanton, Iowa and then moved to Red Oak in 1961. In Red Oak, Bernice was a member of the First Christian Church, Church Women United, Christian Women's Fellowship, and the Good Samaritan Auxiliary. She held a variety of offices in these organizations, including 8 years as treasurer of Church Women United. She volunteered in the hospital gift shop, for "Meals On Wheels", and at the Good Samaritan Center. She enjoyed gardening, growing African violets, and dancing/listening to big band music. Also, she took great pleasure in caring for her cat Mitsy. She moved to "Silvercrest at the Woodlands" assisted living in Clive, Iowa in 2003. In May 2012 she moved to Marshalltown, Iowa where she resided at the Hospice home and Grandview Heights Nursing Home. Bernice was preceded in death by: her husband Donald McCrory on February 14, 1987 and her sister Virginia Bell in March of 2010. She will be dearly missed by her children: Allen (Judy) Hays of Marshalltown, IA and Eileen Ann McCrory of San Diego, CA; and her sister Ferne Curry of Exira, IA. She is survived by her grandchildren: Mark (Cindy) Hays of Winterset, IA; Michael (Ruth) Hays of Davenport, IA; Marci (Michael) Hays-Larson of Cedar Rapids, IA; Hannah McCrory of San Diego, CA; and several nieces and nephews. Her 9 great-grandchildren include: Stephen, Sarah, Jonathan, and Jacob Hays of Winterset, IA; Aaron, Isaac, and Rachel Hays of Davenport, IA; and Holly and Nicholas Larson of Cedar Rapids, IA. Memorials should be directed to First Christian Church, Red Oak, IA. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel, Red Oak, IA, is in charge of arrangements.
