Obituary

Birthplace: Iowa City, Iowa Resided In: Des Moines, Iowa Benjamin Seibert Swanson, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away after a brief illness on October 18, 2018. Ben was born on November 8, 1948, the second son of R. John and Margaret Seibert Swanson. He was raised in Red Oak and graduated from Red Oak Community High School with the Class of 1967. Following high school Ben attended the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 1971. He then entered the U.S. Army as an ROTC second lieutenant. Upon completion of his military service, he returned to South Bend and obtained his MBA in 1976 from Notre Dame. Ben remained a dyed-in-the-wool fan of the Irish for the rest of his life. After jobs with Union Carbide and the Iowa State Bank Examiner he took an accounting position with the United States Postal Service where he worked until his retirement in 2013. He lived in Des Moines for the past 30 years. Ben was preceded in death by his parents (R. John in 2005 and Margaret in 2011). He is survived by brothers Ralph (Ann), Mark (Kai), David and Bruce (Cindy). Nieces Larissa (Jim) Marocco, Christina (Paul) Roberts, Courtney (Tom) Pfeiffer, Kayla Cornelison, Jordyn Cornelison, Abbey (Braden) Quist, Leslie (Austin) Rogers, Darcy Eitzen, nephew Drew Swanson and many other relatives and friends. An open house celebration of life for relatives and friends will be at the Red Oak Country Club from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on November 8, 2018 (Ben's 70th birthday). A private interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery the following day. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
