Birthplace: Cold Water, Michigan Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Becky Gambs, age 57, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Tuesday, August 3, 2004 at her residence after an extended illness. Rebecca Sue Gambs was born February 18, 1947 in Cold Water, Michigan the daughter of Edward and Sue (McCarty) Ellis. The family moved to San Angelo, Texas when Becky was 4 years old. She graduated from Central High School in San Angelo in 1965. Becky received her BS Degree from the University of Texas. That same year she was united in marriage to John Gambs on January 18, 1970. They established their first home in Waterloo, Iowa where John was attending school. They moved to Pochahontas, Iowa where John taught school and their first child, Deborah was born. Later they moved to Lake Park, Iowa where their daughter Denise was born. The family moved to Red Oak, Iowa in 1978. Becky went back to school and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Northwest Missouri State University in 1987. She later earned her teaching certificate. Becky taught school in Red Oak and Corning from 1988 until 2002. After this she became the first English Language Learners Teacher in Red Oak. Becky was a member of the First Covenant Church where she taught Sunday School, was a member of the Christian Education Board, and was the first coordinator of the Christ's Cupboard Community Food Pantry. She was a board member of the Twin Lakes Christian Center and served as superintendent of the Fine Arts Exhibit at the Iowa State Fair for five years. Becky was preceded in death by her father and her father-in-law. Survivors include her husband: John Gambs of Red Oak, IA; daughters: Deborah Gambs of New York, NY; and Denise Gambs of Mountain Home AFB Idaho; her mother: Sue Ellis of San Angelo, TX; 2 sisters: Carol Stokes and husband Roy of San Antonio, TX; and Nancy Wagner and husband Terry of Austin, TX; mother-in-law: Marjorie Gambs of Jackson, TN; 2 brothers-in-law: Carl Gambs and wife Bonnie of Overland Park, KS; and Ed Gambs and wife Eleanor of Logan, IA; 3 sisters-in-law: Margaret Duncan and husband Bob of Jackson, TN; Ruth Johnson and husband David of Ft. Dodge, IA; and Janet Stammer and husband Russ of Rochester, MN; many nieces and nephews including Cody Young and wife Melissa of San Antonio, TX; and Brandi Taylor and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Friday, August 6, 2004 at the First Covenant Church with Rev. Alan Dean officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 PM Thursday, August 5, 2004 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Christ's Cupboard Community Food Pantry or the Southwest Iowa Latino Resource Center.
