Birthplace: Atchison County, MO Resided In: Emerson, IA Barbara Ann Richards, age 85, of Emerson, Iowa, passed away Sunday, January 14, 2018 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Barbara was born January 25, 1932 in Atchison County, Missouri the daughter of Clyde and Minnie (Holman) Thompson. She was raised near Hamburg, Iowa and graduated Hamburg High School in 1949. She was united in marriage to Paul S. Richards on August 14, 1949 in Sidney, Iowa. They moved to Georgia where Barbara worked at a hydrogen bomb plant for a short time. She returned to Iowa living with her sister in Shenandoah where she worked for Interstate Nurseries. Upon Paul's return from service, they moved to a farm near Emerson, Iowa where they made their home. She was a homemaker, worked at the sale barn, and worked for the family business, Richards and Son. Barbara was a member of the Emerson United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Emerson Federated Women, served on the board of the Emerson Public Library, and in her younger years was a 4-H leader and Boy Scout Den Mother. She was very creative and enjoyed tole painting, quilting, sewing, and making porcelain dolls. Barbara was also a wonderful cook and baker. She and Paul spent many winters with their friends at South Padre Island, Texas and enjoyed many trips to Canada fishing. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband: Paul Richards on November 15, 2005; brother: Glen Thompson; sisters: Bette Kellison and Dorothy Greenamyer. Survivors include her son: E. Jeffrey Richards and partner Darcy Reese of Emerson, IA; daughter: Teresa Johnson and husband Greg of Sidney, IA; grandchildren: Julia Richards Krapfl and husband Craig of Ankeny, IA; Christopher Richards and wife Jenni of Clarinda, IA; Chad Johnson and wife Heather of Ames, IA; Jeffrey Johnson and wife Jennifer of Riverton, IA; and Scott Johnson and wife Bridget of Decorah, IA; great grandchildren: Megan, Madison, and MacKenzie Krapfl; Ryan Dyson; Peter and Sophia Richards; and Brayton, Nathaniel, Elliot, and Bentley Johnson; sister: Esther Randolph and husband Robert of Council Bluffs, IA; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 11:30 AM Saturday, January 20, 2018 at the Emerson United Methodist Church. Burial will take place 9:30 AM Saturday at the Sidney, Iowa Cemetery prior to the funeral service. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Friday, January 19, 2018 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Emerson United Methodist Church of the Emerson Public Library. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
