Birthplace: Rural Henderson, IA Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Avis Maynes, age 86, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Thursday, June 19, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Care Center after a brief illness. Avis Maynes was born March 25, 1922 near Henderson, Iowa the daughter of William "Bill" and Verna (Yach) Noel. Avis' mother passed away when Avis was two years old and her father moved the family to a farm south of Emerson where they lived for 20 years. She traveled to Red Oak where she attended and graduated from Red Oak High School. She attended Red Oak Junior College and received her Normal Training. She also took additional classes at Cedar Falls. Avis taught country school in Montgomery County and 7th and 8th grade in Emerson. Avis was united in marriage to Arthur Frazier who was killed in Belgium during WWII. She then married Russell Maynes on May 25, 1946 in Hiawatha, Kansas. They spent their married life farming North of Red Oak. Russell preceded her in death on June 25, 2005. Avis was a member of the Red Oak Presbyterian Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, and volunteered at the Lemon Tree Gift Shop at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital for many years. Avis was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands; and brothers: Donald, William, and Red. Survivors include her two sons: Larry Maynes and wife Janine of Urbandale, Iowa and Keith Maynes and wife Bridgette of Red Oak, Iowa; grandchildren: Shellie Hodges and husband Mel of Kalispell, Montana; Pat Maynes and wife Kelly of Red Oak, Iowa; Jill Roll and husband Brian of Somerset, NJ; Heather Strang and husband Dr. Steven Strang of Des Moines, Iowa; Katelynne, Brittney, Kyleigh, and Abby Maynes all of Red Oak, Iowa; great grandchildren: Stephanie and Stacia Hodges of Kalispell, Montana; Jarrett and Carter Maynes of Red Oak, Iowa; and Olivia and Nolan Strang of Des Moines, Iowa; sister: Mae Claxton and husband Robert of Winchester, Kansas; sister-in-law: Effa Halvin of Red Oak, Iowa; many nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends including Janet Maynes, mother of Pat and Jill, who was very special to Avis. Graveside funeral services will be held 2 PM Monday, June 23, 2008 at the Emerson, Iowa Cemetery. Family and friends will gather at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel by 1:30 PM on Monday to go to the cemetery in procession. There will be open visitation at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
