Birthplace: Barry, Minnesota Resided In: West Des Moines, Iowa formerly Red Oak, Iowa Sadie Aluia Penry, age 98, of West Des Moines, Iowa formerly of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Friday, May 30, 2014 at Edgewater Assisted Living. Aluia was born February 6, 1916 in Barry, Minnesota the daughter of Posey and Sadie (Shearer) Wolf. The family moved to the Red Oak and Elliott area when Aluia was very young. She graduated from the Stanton, Iowa High School. Aluia was united in marriage to Arthur Sungren on June 11, 1939. They farmed near Stanton and Aluia worked at the Stanton High School lunchroom and the Stanton Viking Newspaper as a linotype operator. Arthur preceded Aluia in death and she was later united in marriage to Forrest Penry on September 13, 1971. During their marriage Aluia worked at the Niagara Envelope Co. in Chicago, Illinois. After retirement, they moved to Lake Thunderhead in Missouri. They enjoyed traveling in their motor home to Alaska, Nova Scotia and most of the United States. After Forrest passed away, Aluia moved back to Red Oak, Iowa to be near her family and friends, including a childhood friend, Earl Gemmill. Her last years were spent at Edgewater Assisted Living Center and Loden Long Term Care in West Des Moines, Iowa. Aluia was a member of the Elliott United Methodist Church in Elliott, Iowa, where she was baptized 98 years ago. She loved her family, her kitties, traveling, reading, and corresponding with her many friends and family. Those of you who had the pleasure of receiving one of Aluia's three page typed letters know how much she enjoyed remembering birthdays, anniversaries, and Christmas. She had a list of well over one hundred people. Aluia also kept a daily diary since her 16th birthday. Preceding her in death were her parents; husbands: Arthur Sungren and Forrest Penry; dear friend: Earl Gemmill; daughter: Sandra; sister: Doris; and stepson: Teddy. Survivors include her son: Richard Sungren and wife Mary of Clive, IA; daughter: Karen Henderson and husband Bob of Waukee, IA; step-son: Dan Penry and wife Nancy of Manteno, IL; 8 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandsons; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, June 7, 2014 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak, Iowa. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Elliott United Methodist Church or the Edgewater Good Samaritan Fund. The family wishes to thank the staff at Edgewater (Assisted Living, Households, Wesley Life Hospice and Administration) for their incredible love and care. You are the Best!
