Birthplace: Page County, Iowa Resided In: Rural Red Oak, Iowa Merlin Harry Anderson, age 90, of Red Oak, Iowa, passed away Saturday, September 9, 2017 at his residence. Merlin was born August 28, 1927 in Page County, Iowa the son of G. Harry and Nannie (Alm) Anderson. He graduated from Red Oak High School and later was drafted in the United States Army during WWII. Upon his return from service, Merlin started farming. He was united in marriage to Effa Samples on February 23, 1949 in Red Oak. They moved to the current family farm in 1962. Merlin also worked for the ASCS Office part time for over 30 years. He was a longtime member of the Fremont Lutheran Church at Nyman serving on the church board several times. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and going on trips to Missouri to see family, but his true passion was farming. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife: Effa Anderson on October 16, 2008; brothers: Walter and Russell: grandchildren: Jared and Nicole Jipsen; and son-in-law: Steve Greever. Survivors include his children: Alice "Elaine" Greever of Bedford, IA; Martha Lantz and husband Dennis of Red Oak, IA; Mark Anderson and wife Deb of Mountain Home, AR; Ella Pettis and husband Larry of Fremont, NE; Paul Anderson of Red Oak, IA; Amy Jipsen of Gretna, NE; and Linda Askey and husband Mike of Red Oak, IA; 15 grandchildren: many great grandchildren; brothers-in-law: Tom Samples and wife Dale of Bothel, WA; Kirk Samples and wife Delores of Red Oak, IA; and Duane Magneson of Red Oak, IA; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Wednesday, September 13, 2017, at Fremont Lutheran Church at Nyman, Iowa. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery at Nyman. Memorials are suggested to the Fremont Lutheran Church. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
