Obituary

Birthplace: Montgomery County, Iowa Resided In: Elliott, Iowa Mary Margaret 'Peg' Fast, age 96, of Elliott, Iowa, passed away Sunday, November 14, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Society in Villisca, Iowa. Peg was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great great-grandmother whose love for her family was displayed throughout her life. Peg was born August 26, 1925, in Montgomery County, IA, the daughter of Marion Lester and Vera Catherine (King) Cozad. Peg graduated from Red Oak High School in 1943. She clerked at a grocery store in Red Oak then moved temporarily to Omaha, Nebraska, and to Wisconsin where she worked in factories to support the war effort. She was united in marriage to Orville Luther Fast on January 15, 1946, in Red Oak, Iowa. Peg and Orville made their home on the Fast family farm near Morton's Mill, Iowa their entire married life. Their farm was recognized as a Century Farm at the Iowa State Fair in August of 2000. They were members of the Villisca United Methodist Church. Their first meal as a married couple was pancakes which Peg cooked for Orville using the cast iron griddle her parents gave them as a wedding present. That started a decades long tradition. Every Saturday was pancake day in the Fast home and everyone looked forward to Peg's pancakes! Together, Peg and Orville raised seven children. In addition to helping on the farm, keeping house, and feeding and clothing seven children, Peg enjoyed attending her children's (and later her grandchildren's and great grandchildren's) sporting events and concerts; family picnics at Viking Lake Park, Pilot Grove Park, and Hacklebarney Park; hosting and attending large holiday and birthday suppers for her immediate and extended family members; sewing, maintaining a massive garden, canning, and bargain shopping; quilting every Wednesday afternoon with members of the Morton's Mill Ladies' Aid who were life-long friends; and playing cards. Peg was a great cook! She hosted annual Christmas cookie making parties for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In her spare time, later in life, Peg also enjoyed reading, attending Cowboy Church, listening to Big Band music, never missing a Thursday Mexican Night at the Hayloft or a Friday hair appointment with LuAnn, watching Days of Our Lives, and later, after (finally) getting cable, Hallmark movies. She loved it when family, friends and neighbors dropped by and always had hot coffee and homemade goodies on hand to share with them.
