Birthplace: Montgomery County, IA Resided In: Corning formerly Coburg, IA Doris Mildred Towne, age 94, of Corning, Iowa, passed away June 11, 2014, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Doris was born January 9, 1920, in Garfield Township in Montgomery County Iowa, the second child of John E. and Harriett (Lake) Shaffer. Doris attended several country schools as well as Wales and Red Oak. She was united in marriage to W. Howard Towne on August 9, 1938, in Red Oak, Iowa. In 1949, they moved to Coburg, Iowa, where they lived for the next 37 years. To this union 4 children were born (Chester, infant daughter, DeLoy and Wanda). Doris worked several places through the years including cooking for 17 years at Johnny's Café in Red Oak, Iowa, before retiring in 1985. If you were lucky enough to eat a steak that Doris cooked, you had a really great tasting meal. After Howard passed away in April of 1986, Doris moved to Westgate Housing in Corning, Iowa on July 4. Over the next 28 years, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Her hobbies included quilting, crocheting afghans and doilies, and reading. Doris was an avid gardener during her years in Coburg and continued to raise tomatoes at her apartment in Corning. In the summer, she enjoyed sitting in her apartment watching the humming birds through the window. She was preceded in death by her infant daughter; son: DeLoy; husband: Howard; her parents; brother: Harry Shaffer; sisters: Gayle Swanson and Jean Hughes; daughter in law: JoAnn Towne; and son-in-law: Lonnie Hughes. Survivors include her son: Chester Towne of Cumberland, IA; daughter: Wanda Hughes of Stuart, IA; daughter-in-law: Gail Humphreys Towne of Corning, IA; sisters: Blanche Sederburg of Omaha, NE and Ruby Lister of Red Oak, IA; 4 grandchildren: Julie Hancock (Edie), Tammy Brown (Dave), Doug Towne (Pam) and BillieJo Gomez (Rick); 4 great-grandchildren: Phillip, Joshua, Elizabeth, and Anne; 4 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law: Merle Jean Shaffer of Emerson, IA; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, June 14, 2014 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the funeral service. Memorials are suggested to the Adams County Rescue Unit. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel of Red Oak, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.
