Birthplace: Rural Henderson, Iowa Resided In: Red Oak, Iowa Donna Wetzel Corliss, age 78, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Saturday, January 2, 2016 at the Stanton Care Center in Stanton, Iowa. Donna was born on the family farm near Henderson, Iowa on July 27, 1937. She was the daughter of Charles and Ella Stewart Wetzel. She attended Wales Lincoln School, graduating as valedictorian in 1955. She got medals for typing, perfect attendance, best all-around student, and best girl athlete. She played basketball at Wales and received many honors, including Southwest Iowa first team her senior year, and honorable mention for the southwest team her junior year, on the county teams her junior and senior years, and state team honorable mention. She was known for her long shot. Joe leader, great basketball fan, became a great fan of hers. She has a spinning wheel and wagon and horses made by him after he was ninety years old. After graduation she attended Clarinda Junior College where she graduated third in her grade in 1957. She married James Corliss on June 23, l957. He passed away on January 24, 1995. She started teaching at Stanton in August, 1957. She taught there for 13 years until her son Jim was born in 1970. After that she subbed for Stanton and Red Oak. She got her B.S. in Education from the University of Omaha in May, 1968. She later added 40 more hours of college education. She started teaching Title 1 in Red Oak in 1978. She retired from teaching in 2006. She then worked at CDS Global from July 2006 to December 2007. After that, she did substitute teaching. She received the Veterans of Foreign Wars Teacher Award, the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year award, the Ak-sar-ben Good Neighbor Award, ISEA Teacher award from 2002 to 2006, and the sports fan of the year. She also received the alumni distinction award from the Wales Alumni. She received a letter from Governor Vilsack when she retired. She was proud of her family receiving the Century farm award. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma where she had been very active, Kappa Delta Pi, the Iowa Retired School personnel Association where she was vice President, NEA, ISEA, Southwest Iowa Reading Teachers Organization, was secretary-treasurer for the Wales Alumni Association and was a member of the First Christian Church where she was a deacon and greeter. She volunteered at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in the cafeteria and at the desk. She loved to attend her grandchildren's activities and was very proud of them and her great grandchildren. She enjoyed babysitting her three great grandchildren. She was an avid reader. She had many stories published in the Capper's Magazine. Preceding her in death were her husband, Jim, Father, Charles, Mother, Ella, Sister, Charlotte and brother, Charles Jr. She is survived by her son: Jim and wife Liz, grandchildren: Brock Corliss and Maura Jones (Tyler), and great grandchildren: Michael Corliss, Peyton Jones, and Brooklyn Jones all of Red Oak; sister in law: Betty Wetzel of Bellevue, NE , nephew: Clay Lynn Wetzel (Kathy) of Red Oak; niece: Betty Linn Wright of Bellevue, NE, great nephews: Kyle Snyder (Marta), Eric Snyder, Heath Wetzel, Derek Wetzel (Jamie), Adam Wetzel (Megan), great niece: Valarie Raney (Jamie), great great nephews and nieces, Alycia Raney, Nathan Raney (Emily), Logan Wetzel, Kaleb Wetzel, Aiden Wetzel, Parker Wetzel, Tyler Wetzel, Seth Wetzel, Haley Wetzel, and Drew Wetzel; sisters-in-law: Bonnie Gitter (Jim) of Omaha, NE and Beverly Webb of Creston, IA and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, January 7, 2016 at the First Christian Church. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church, the Red Oak Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association, or the Montgomery County History Center. Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
